@cosme TOKYO: A Love Letter to Japan's Beauty Temple

@cosme TOKYO: A Love Letter to Japan's Beauty Temple

Multiple floors. Tens of thousands of products. An entire ecosystem of Japanese beauty under one roof. @cosme TOKYO doesn't feel like a store so much as a beauty institution, one you can happily wander through for hours.

Our team at Rei Cosmetics was invited inside before the store opened for a behind-the-scenes tour and photo shoot. Walking through the quiet, perfectly arranged space felt like entering a temple built for beauty. With our makeup artist, model, and photographer alongside us, we were like kids let loose in a candy store. Faced with several floors packed with beauty discoveries, none of us knew where to begin.

A History Unlike Anything Else

@cosme began as a beauty review website in the late 1990s, long before "influencer" became part of our vocabulary. Japanese shoppers shared honest opinions about skincare, makeup, and haircare, helping its rankings become a trusted resource for beauty consumers across the country.

The Harajuku flagship feels like that digital community brought to life. What makes @cosme distinctive is the prominent role consumer reviews and rankings play in the in-store experience. These consumer insights are reflected throughout the store, creating a space that feels less like traditional retail and more like exploring a store curated by an entire community of beauty lovers.

Wandering the Floors

The moment you enter the store, you see The Best Cosmetics Awards section. @cosme Best Cosmetics Awards is one of Japan’s most influential beauty awards based off product reviews by actual users. This section is where you see the items that are receiving the highest reviews from consumers. They are organized by product categories with clear rankings and commentary on why the products performed so well, making it a great first stop.

Next, we were immediately drawn to a whole wall dedicated to sheet masks. It felt like a universe of its own, with Derma Laser and LuluLun each occupying serious shelf space, proof of how central sheet masks are to Japanese skincare routines.

Then came makeup. Starting with cult classic CANMAKE, we found the trending brand Wonjungyo with its own prime real estate, while CipiCipi's colorful display, gone viral on TikTok, made clear exactly what the attraction is.

Nearby, mascara had its own showdown. KISSME Heroine Make is loved for formulas built to survive long, humid Tokyo summers, while dejavu is known for tubing mascara that washes off with just warm water. The lash wall was a rabbit hole of its own, D-UP and Dolly Wink falsies stacked floor to ceiling in styles so natural you'd swear they weren't false at all.

But there was so much more. In the haircare section, &honey smelled every bit as good as the internet promises, and YOLU's nighttime line had us wishing we'd packed an extra suitcase just for shampoo. On the first floor, luxe brands such as Shiseido, SUQQU, and RMK reminded us that @cosme isn't simply a drugstore playground. The store brings affordable sheet masks, cult makeup, innovative devices, everyday haircare, and prestige skincare together under one roof, and that mix is part of its magic.

Ultimately, @cosme is a destination for discovery. It shows you what's trending, what people in Japan are loving, and what's become a cult classic.

What's Trending in 2026

Thank goodness we had @cosme's PR Chihiro Wadano guide us through the store as she introduced us to some of the season's biggest trends, offering a fascinating snapshot of where Japanese beauty is heading.

"Panda cheeks," blush swept upward from beneath the eyes and blended into the eyeshadow, is having a moment. So is "filter skin," created using complexion products designed to soften redness and even out the skin's appearance, almost like applying a subtle camera filter in real life.

Beauty devices are also moving from occasional indulgence to everyday essential. Sun care has expanded beyond sunscreen into a complete defense routine, sunglasses included. Even hydration is getting a beauty-focused upgrade, with vitamin-infused "beauty waters" now shelved beside more traditional skincare.

Why J-Beauty?

Walking through @cosme reminded us why we started Rei Cosmetics in the first place.

As Japanese natives, we grew up with many of these brands. We know firsthand how excellent they can be, and @cosme is proof of just how deep the Japanese beauty ecosystem goes. It's a space built around helping the right person find the right product, informed by real experiences and a culture that takes product performance seriously.

The question that stayed with us was simple: why isn't more of this available outside Japan?

So much of J-beauty still feels like a well-kept secret. We wanted consumers in North America to discover the products we already knew and loved. That's why Rei Cosmetics exists: to explain why an affordable Japanese mascara can outperform a prestige waterproof formula three times the price, why sheet mask brands nobody's heard of stateside sell out weekly in Tokyo, and why the brands our mothers used still hold up decades later.

Many Japanese beauty brands have spent years, sometimes generations, quietly refining their formulas and earning customers' trust. That kind of reputation feels increasingly rare in a global beauty industry driven by rapid trend cycles and the pressure to produce something new. Our role at Rei Cosmetics is to help bridge that gap, bringing these products to customers in North America along with the history and philosophy that make them special.

Seeing @cosme up close, the scale of the store, the community trust behind it, the sheer joy of wandering its aisles, made that mission feel even more worthwhile.

If You Go

If you're visiting Japan, @cosme TOKYO in Harajuku is worth building an entire afternoon around. Wear comfortable shoes. Bring a shopping list, but be prepared to abandon it. Most importantly, give yourself much more time than you think you'll need.

And if Tokyo isn't in the cards right now, Rei Cosmetics carries many of the discoveries found on those shelves and ships throughout the United States. Consider this your standing invitation to come explore J-beauty with us.

Thank you to the @cosme team, and especially Ms Wadano, for welcoming us and giving us such a memorable look behind the scenes.
