If there's one cleansing habit that separates Japanese skincare from most other routines, it's this: washing your face twice, in two completely different ways.
In Japan, it's called double cleansing or W cleansing. It's not about being more aggressive. It's about being more precise. Each step has a specific job, and the two steps together do something that neither could accomplish alone.
Why two steps?
The surface of your skin at the end of the day holds two very different kinds of residue. The first is oil-based: sunscreen, foundation, sebum, the waxy components of long-wear makeup. The second is water-based: sweat, pollution particles, dirt, the general accumulation of being outside and moving through the world.
These two types of residues respond to different chemistry. Oil-based cleansers dissolve oil-based buildup; that's their strength. Water-based cleansers lift water-based impurities; that's theirs. Trying to do both with one product means compromising on at least one of them.
Double cleansing doesn't compromise. It uses each cleanser for exactly what it does best, in the right order, so that by the time you're finished, the skin is genuinely clean; not surface clean, but properly clear, without anything left behind that shouldn't be there.
Step one: the oil cleanser or makeup remover
The first step targets everything oil-based. This is where sunscreen and makeup come off; not by scrubbing, but by dissolving. Oil-based formulas break down oil-based products, loosening them from the skin so they can be rinsed or wiped away without friction. Balms work on the same principle but start as a solid and melt on contact with skin.
This step needs to be thorough but gentle. The goal isn't to strip; it's to dissolve. A good first-step cleanser melts into the skin, lifts what needs to come off, and leaves skin ready for step two without feeling tight or disrupted. Here are some products you can try:
Cleansing oils:
FANCL Mild Cleansing Oil: Japan's best-selling makeup remover. This preservative-free oil melts away waterproof makeup and sunscreen without harsh rubbing, infused with Aged Hop Extract to soften and lift impurities while leaving skin hydrated, not stripped. Rinses completely clean with no residue.
Biore Makeup Remover Perfect Oil: a non-greasy cleansing oil that works on both wet and dry skin, dissolving even waterproof mascara and long-wear foundation effortlessly. Dye and paraben-free, it rinses clean without any sticky residue. A good option when you need quick, thorough removal.
Keana Nadeshiko Rice Cleansing Oil: made with rice bran oil and 100% Japanese rice serum, this silky oil dissolves makeup and pore-clogging sebum while hydrating as it cleans. Emulsifies quickly with water and rinses away leaving skin soft and refined. A particularly good choice for dry or sensitive skin.
&honey Cleansing Oil: formulated with over 90% moisturising ingredients including honey, argan oil, and hyaluronic acid. Lifts away makeup and dead skin while preserving the skin's natural moisture. Pump, massage, and rinse — simple and nourishing.
Cleansing balms:
&honey Cleansing Balm: a balm-to-oil texture that melts into skin on contact, removing makeup in three steps: dissolve, condition, and hydrate. Over 90% of the formula is made up of moisturizing ingredients including honey, argan oil, papain, and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid. Skin finishes clean, soft, and nourished rather than depleted.
Liquid removers and lotions:
Kikumasamune Japanese Sake Makeup Remover: a liquid makeup remover powered by sake, three essential amino acids, placenta extract, and arbutin. Dissolves makeup effectively while keeping skin hydrated throughout. Safe for lash extensions.
Cow Brand Mutenka Makeup Cleansing Milk: Japan's best-selling cleansing milk, completely additive-free. The soft milk texture lifts away makeup without friction or irritation, while ceramide protects the moisture barrier throughout. Free of artificial colorants, fragrances, parabens, preservatives, mineral oils, and alcohol. Ideal for dry or sensitive skin that reacts to conventional removers.
Rice Made+ Cleansing Lotion: a no-rinse cleansing lotion applied with a cotton pad, infused with stabilized Vitamin C, ceramide EOP, NP, and AP, and rice-derived ingredients. Swipes away makeup while delivering hydration. Safe for lash extensions and ideal as a gentler first step for minimal or lighter makeup days.
Step two: the facial wash
Once oil-based impurities are removed, the second step handles everything else; the water-based residue, any remaining traces from step one, and the general surface grime that builds up through the day. Because the heavy lifting has already been done, this cleanser doesn't need to be powerful. It needs to be thorough and gentle: cleaning the skin's surface without disrupting the barrier that was just cleared of its burden. These are some of our favorites:
Foaming cleansers, the everyday second step:
Cow Brand Mutenka Foaming Facial Cleanser: a perennial bestseller in Japan. Plant-based amino acid surfactants lift residue without irritating, while ceramide and glycine keep the moisture barrier intact. Free of artificial fragrances, colors, parabens, preservatives, and alcohol; exactly what a second-step cleanser should be.
FANCL Pure Moist Cleansing Foam: a preservative-free foam cleanser that creates a rich, cushioned lather from a push-pump dispenser. Double ceramide and amino acids support the barrier as it cleans, leaving skin soft and comfortable rather than squeaky.
Cream washes, for a richer, more nourishing cleanse:
FANCL Skin Conditioning Cream Wash: FANCL's newest facial cleanser, designed to actively hydrate the stratum corneum while it cleans. The fluffy foam creates a moisture barrier during cleansing itself, so skin finishes feeling smooth and comfortable with no trace of tightness. Preservative-free, fragrance-free, and color-free.
Kikumasamune Japanese Sake Face Wash: a face wash built around sake, cellulose, three essential amino acids, and squalane. The cellulose draws out pore-clogging debris while the sake and amino acids keep skin balanced. A good second step if your skin tends toward dullness or congestion alongside dryness.
Sekkisei Face Cream Wash: a cream that transforms into a cloud-like foam, infused with Kose's signature herbal blend: Fermented Coix Seed, Angelica, Melothria, Moutan Bark, and Ritha Tree Extract. This is J-beauty's botanically-rooted tradition translated into a daily cleanser; purifying, brightening, and deeply comfortable. A step up for anyone who wants their second cleanse to feel like more of a ritual.
A deep cleanse, the powder oxygen cleanser:
FANCL Deep Clear Washing Powder: the one that tops every Tokyo skincare shopping list. This cult powder cleanser transforms into extraordinarily fine, dense foam on contact with water, a texture impossible to achieve with conventional liquid formulas, because the powder form creates stronger, more elastic bubbles. Oxygen Powder Technology releases micro-bubbles that reach deeper into pores, while charcoal and adsorption clay lift out blackheads and sebum plugs that regular cleansers miss. Dual Fruit Enzyme Technology addresses dullness at the same time. Packaged in 30 single-use capsules that preserve potency and make it perfect for travel. Use two to three times a week as a deeper second step when skin needs more thorough cleansing; not a daily replacement, but an occasional reset that makes a noticeable difference.
The order, and why it matters
Step one always comes first. Applying a foaming cleanser over sunscreen or makeup before the oil step means working the surfactants against a film they weren't designed to remove. Start with the oil, balm, milk, or lotion remover; whichever suits your skin and the level of makeup you wear; remove it thoroughly, then follow with the foam or cream wash.
Between steps, there's no need to let skin fully dry. Apply the second cleanser to damp skin, work it into a lather, and rinse with lukewarm water. Pat dry gently and move straight into your routine while skin is still slightly damp.
What double cleansing is not
It's not about washing your face more aggressively or cleansing twice because once wasn't enough. Done correctly, double cleansing should feel no more stripping than a careful single cleanse. The products work together so that the whole process is gentler than it might sound; because each cleanser is only being asked to do the thing it does best.
Skin that's properly cleansed at the end of the day; truly clear, without residue, absorbs everything that follows more effectively. Your lotion, your emulsion, your cream: all of it works better on a surface that's genuinely ready for it.
That's the real point of double cleansing. Not clean for the sake of clean. Clean so that everything else in your routine can do its job.
