About a year ago, we shared our favorite spots to shop for Japanese cosmetics in Japan: places like @Cosme, Loft, Matsukiyo, Bic Camera, and of course, Don Quijote. Those classics are still unbeatable, but this time we wanted to take you a little further and highlight some lesser-known gems. From affordable everyday finds to higher-end indulgences, here are more amazing places to shop J-Beauty in Tokyo.
Don’t let the European-sounding name fool you - Ainz & Tulpe is a Japanese company, part of Ain Pharmaciez headquartered in Hokkaido. This beauty and pharmacy chain is one of the best spots for affordable cosmetics from Japan, Korea, and China, with shelves that are always well-curated and easy to navigate. My go-to location is right by Shinjuku’s East Exit, but with hundreds of stores nationwide, chances are you’ll stumble upon one.
Plaza began as part of Sony but is now an independent chain known for irresistibly cute products across cosmetics, fashion, and stationery. The beauty section is full of adorable packaging and even Plaza-exclusive designs. Plaza has locations nationwide, but I personally like the one inside Atré Ebisu. Fair warning: it’s nearly impossible to leave without buying something you didn’t know you needed!
As one of Japan’s largest drugstore chains, Tsuruha Drug is a practical stop that carries both pharmacy essentials and a wide range of beauty products. Like Matsukiyo or Ainz & Tulpe, you’ll often find licensed pharmacists in-store who can answer questions about sensitive skin care or over-the-counter acne treatments. Prices are generally reasonable, making it a great everyday stop.
For clean beauty lovers, Cosme Kitchen is a must. Specializing in organic and natural cosmetics, this boutique chain carries both Japanese and international brands you won’t often find elsewhere. The price tags are higher, but the selections feel special. I usually stop by the Omotesando location, though you can also find Cosme Kitchen inside several department stores.
If you’re ready to splurge, head to Isetan. This iconic department store chain stocks both international luxury brands (think Chanel, Dior) and beloved Japanese names like clé de peau, DECORTÉ, SUQQU, THREE, and RMK. The flagship Shinjuku store is my favorite, not only for its expansive beauty hall, but also for Isetan Beauty Apothecary, a curated section dedicated to organic and natural beauty similar to Cosme Kitchen. It’s pricier than your average drugstore, but well worth the experience.
