At Rei Cosmetics, we believe that great beauty products don't happen by accident. We like to understand the companies behind the brands we carry including their history, their monozukuri (craftsmanship) philosophy, and the people whose dedication has shaped products loved around the world.
During a recent trip to Japan, I had the opportunity to visit Isehan's Beni Museum in Aoyama, Tokyo. While many people know Isehan as the company behind the viral KISSME Heroine Make mascara, few realize that its history stretches back more than 200 years. What I discovered at the museum wasn't just the story of one company; it was the story of Japanese beauty itself.
The museum traces the evolution of Japanese cosmetics from traditional beni, a luxurious red pigment made from safflower petals, to the wide range of makeup products available today. I also learned how beni is still made using centuries-old techniques. The process begins with safflowers grown in Yamagata Prefecture and involves painstaking craftsmanship to extract the vibrant pigment. Today, Isehan remains one of the last beni houses in Japan and is committed to preserving this important cultural tradition.
The Beni Museum is open to the public free of charge so anyone can learn about the history of beni and Japanese beauty. Visitors are encouraged to try authentic beni-based products, and the staff generously share the techniques and traditions behind them. The museum is also frequently visited by cosmetology schools, helping educate the next generation about Japan's beauty heritage.
I left the museum not only with a deeper understanding of Japanese cosmetics, but with an even greater appreciation for the craftsmanship, education, and cultural preservation that continue to define Isehan today.
At Rei Cosmetics, we often talk about innovative formulations, carefully selected ingredients, and advanced Japanese beauty technology. Those are all important. But after visiting the Beni Museum, I was reminded that the true difference behind many exceptional J-Beauty products is the people who create them and the values they have upheld for generations.
Whether it's the iconic KISSME Heroine Make mascara or another Japanese beauty favorite, every product has a story. Understanding those stories helps us appreciate not only how these products are made, but why they've earned the trust of customers for decades or even centuries.
