At Rei Cosmetics, we’ve been exploring monozukuri, the Japanese philosophy of craftsmanship and dedication to excellence. This time, our journey took us to Kikumasamune, a renowned sake brewery that also creates some of Japan’s most beloved skincare products.
When we first introduced Kikumasamune skincare to the U.S., many were surprised to learn that these lotions and creams come from one of Japan’s oldest sake breweries. In Japan, however, Kikumasamune is a household name. You’ll find their sake everywhere from restaurants to supermarkets, even convenience stores. Their legacy stretches back centuries, rooted in carefully preserved brewing traditions and cultural rituals that remain at the heart of their work today.
Kikumasamune’s commitment to sharing this heritage goes beyond the bottle. In Nada, they’ve opened a sake museum where visitors can immerse themselves in the history of sake brewing. The museum is free to the public and has become a popular stop for both local and international travelers who want to experience the craft up close.
On our recent trip to Japan, we had the privilege of visiting both the Kikumasamune Museum and the research and development facilities. Meeting the makers and artisans firsthand gave us a deeper appreciation of how the centuries-old art of sake brewing translates into skincare. The same attention to detail, reverence for tradition, and pursuit of quality that define their sake also define their beauty products. We left inspired and, honestly, in awe of their dedication.
We captured some of this journey in a short video, now live on our YouTube channel. If you’re planning a trip to Japan, we wholeheartedly recommend adding the Kikumasamune Museum to your itinerary.
We are deeply grateful to Kikumasamune for welcoming us and sharing their story.
At Rei Cosmetics, we believe beauty is more meaningful when you understand its roots. We look forward to bringing you more stories of monozukuri and the craftsmanship behind the products we love.
